orton-gillingham & structured literacy
support
Long-term literacy success and academic achievement.
A structured literacy approach is a systematic and explicit method of teaching reading that emphasizes the understanding of the relationships between sounds (phonology), letters (orthography), and meanings (semantics). This approach includes several key components, such as phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency, and comprehension strategies.
I provide lessons that focus on the five key areas of literacy but target the specific skills that your child shows the greatest need. Using a highly engaging and revolutionary lesson delivery platform, lessons are delivered using engaging, mulitsensory tools and strategies that help students focus and actively engage in their own learning.
What is the Orton-Gillingham Approach?
The Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach is a structured, multisensory method used to teach reading, writing, and spelling, particularly beneficial for individuals with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. It was developed in the 1930s by Dr. Samuel T. Orton, who was a neurologist, and Anna Gillingham, an educator and psychologist.
Principles of the Orton-Gillingham Approach
-
Multisensory Learning: The OG approach incorporates visual, auditory, and kinesthetic-tactile elements to enhance learning. This means students might trace letters while saying their sounds or use manipulatives.
-
Structured and Sequential: Lessons are structured and follow a logical sequence. Instruction starts with the most basic concepts and gradually moves to more complex ideas, ensuring mastery at each level.
-
Individualized Instruction: The program is tailored to meet the specific needs of each student. Teachers assess students to determine their strengths, weaknesses, and progress, adjusting instruction accordingly.
-
Cumulative Learning: New skills build on previously learned material. For example, once a student learns a letter-sound correspondence, they will consistently review and use this knowledge in future lessons.
-
Direct Instruction: Instruction is explicit and clear. Teachers provide direct teaching of concepts rather than expecting students to infer rules or patterns on their own.
-
Diagnostic and Therapeutic: The approach involves ongoing assessment and feedback. Teachers continuously evaluate student progress to inform instruction and identify areas needing more focus.
Components of the Orton-Gillingham Approach
-
Phonology and Phonemic Awareness: Instruction includes understanding sound structure, including the ability to segment, blend, and manipulate sounds in words.
-
Sound-Symbol Association: Students learn the relationship between letters (or groups of letters) and sounds systematically.
-
Syllable Instruction: Teaching various syllable types and rules for decoding and encoding words is integral to the approach.
-
Morphology: Students explore the meaning of words through prefixes, suffixes, and root words, enhancing their vocabulary and comprehension skills.
-
Syntax and Grammar: Instruction may cover sentence structure, parts of speech, and conventions of writing to aid in overall language skills.
-
Reading Comprehension: Strategies for understanding and interpreting text are emphasized to support overall literacy.
